04-007. Russel Wright
American Modern chop plate
Steubenville Pottery
USA, 1939
13 x 13 x 1.25"
Glazed ceramic
Manufacturer's mark and facsimile signature

This is the second Russel Wright chop plate I’ve unearthed in a thrift shop in as many months. Surprising, since before now, I’ve never encountered one, except in antique shops at astronomical prices.

It’s always fun to find large Russel Wright pieces in a thrift shop. I can’t help but think of all the people who had possibly overlooked the beauty of it’s design ... something would be difficult for me to do with a piece as giant as the American Modern chop plate.

Although coral is one of the more common colors, it holds a special place in my heart. When I first began collecting Russel Wright designs I showed a few pieces to my mother, who promptly exclaimed that my grandmother on my father’s side of the family used to use coral American Modern as her daily dishes in the early 1950's. It makes me happy to know that my family has a history with the fabulous modern design, especially since my family has a strong foothold in the traditional.

Found on April 21, 2004 in Richfield, MN.
