04-012. Bernard Buffet
Suburban street lithograph
Les Editions Braun et Cie
France, 1952
14.25 x 11 (plate size)
Lithograph
Signed in plate

Lately I’ve been seeing Bernard Buffet lithographs all over the place in midcentury decorating magazines, auctions, and on the web. His popularity, however, isn't necessarily indicative of my taste for his work. I find it difficult to look at: crudely rendered, without the innocence of "outsider" or "naive" art.

This street scene is from a 1961 edition of an image originally printed in 1952. This isn't uncommon for Buffet's work, or the work of any popular artist. The production of fine art prints is highly sales-driven. If an artist is popular, his images are often reprinted to fill the demand for his work.

This lithograph is a good example of how I build my collection. Since I cannot afford to purchase items on my own through auctions and in genre-specific shops, I need to fund the purchase of items I cannot find in thrift shops through the sales and trading of those I find that I do not want to keep for myself.

Found on May 07, 2004 in New Hope, MN.
