04-013. Jo Dendel
Bantu bread & butter plate
Denwar Ceramics
USA, 1946
6 x 6.5 x 0.5"
Glazed ceramic
Signed with manufacturer's mark

Denwar ceramics are quite uncommon in the Midwest for some reason. This is unfortunate, because I very much admire Bantu, especially the shape of the plates. In a way reminiscent of Ben Siebel's Roseville Raymor line, with a football-shaped silhouette.

One interesting local connection my neighborhood has with Denwar's creators is that before designing the Bantu line, Jo Dendel's wife ,Esther Warner, taught art at the University of Minnesota—very near where this plate was found!

The bread and butter plate originally retailed at 70 cents each, about 1/10th of what I paid for this example in a thrift shop! Normally I wouldn’t spend nearly seven dollars on a plate in a junk store, but I decided that the Bantu shape needed a representative in my collection, and have not ever had the opportunity to purchase one in "the wild" before.

Found on May 07, 2004 in Brooklyn Center, MN.
