04-025. Marc Chagall
Le Livre Italien Contemporain lithograph
Mourlot Freres
France, 1959
3.25 x 3.25 x 3.25"
Lithograph
Signed in the plate

After my not-so-positive review of the Bernard Buffet lithograph earlier this month, this piece is a splendid recovery! Marc Chagall is a god of the modernist movement in art. His work can be seen in museums and galleries all over the world. In short, his is a top-notch name in the roster of art greats of the 20th century.

This particular piece is plate 19 from the Affiches Originales series, which is a group of lithographic posters by the "big" names of modern art printed in a format especially for the art collector. The series was printed in 1959 by the major printer of the era, Mourlot Freres, who worked with such modern masters as Picasso, Chagall, Braque, Matisse, Miro, Leger, and Dufy. The original poster was for a show of contemporary Italian books that took place June 1953 in Nice, at the Galerie des Ponchettes.

Found on May 31, 2004 in Richfield, MN.
