04-027. Albert Lang
Glouchester etching
Unknown publisher
USA, c. 1945
4 x 6" plate size
Etching
Signed in pencil by the artist

I don't know how many times I've passed up a nice little artwork in a thrift shop because I either think I don't have space for it, or I'm unfamiliar with the artist who created it. First off, I only collect works on paper, and how much room does one sheet take up? Secondly, there have been countless times I’ve passed up a piece by an "unknown" that I’ve liked, only to learn later that it was by a listed artist.

Those two things considered, I'm trying to change my habits. This sweet little etching was one step in the right direction. Although my research has turned up nothing about Albert Lang, I really do like this piece. I particularly am attracted to the reflection of the boats in the water, and the rays of sun gloriously radiating across the image. It almost has an art deco feel in that respect.

What I find most poignant, though, is the inscription on the back of the print. "Albert Lang. Artist & business man. Husband 2 Carol R. Lang. Father 2 Lucy L. Miller."

Found on June 04, 2004 in Richfield, MN.
