04-031. Massimo Vignelli
Maxmugs & Max-1 plates
Heller
Italy, 1964
Plastic
Manufacturer's mark

For some reason, I can rarely pass up Max-1 dinnerware when I come across it. I'm not sure why it commands such high prices in online auctions compared to other plasticware lines, but it is so plentiful in the thrift shops in this part of the country I often use it to fund my personal collection.

I find more often than not, the buyers for Max-1 designs are in Japan. The Japanese attraction to pop and op designs seems a perfect match to Vignelli’s designs for Heller. Fortunately, shipping the lightweight plastics is relatively inexpensive—even for overseas transactions.

The green color of these few pieces seems less common than red, white, blue, and yellow pieces. I see those other 4 colors more often than any others. Fortunately I sold off most of the Heller pieces I have been hoarding several months ago. These green pieces probably will be the start of another large group which will find itself on the other side of the world.

Found on June 12, 2004 in Columbia Heights, MN.
