General American
USA, 1944
3.5 x 4.5 x 3" (cup)
5.75 x 5.75 x 0.75" (bread & butter plates)
Melamine
Signed with manufacturer's mark

Russel Wright was considered to be the father of plastic dinnerware, and his designs for the Meladur line are the origin of this title. Meladur was the first melamine/melmac dinnerware on the market, initially produced for institutional and military use and later (1951) for consumer sales.

These particular examples are after-contract pieces, and do not have the Wright signature mark. The maroon color wasn't produced during the life of Wright's contract with General American, but was introduced after Russel took his name off the products.

Found on February 26, 2005 in Burnsville, MN.
