Limited to an edition of 215, Elmyr de Hory's Hommages par Elmyr portfolio is a fascinating look at the end of a career in art forgery. Howard Sackler wrote in his introduction to the portfolio, "That these works come from his hand while he plays the role of Matisse, or of Modigliani, or of Dufy, does not diminish them. On hundreds of walls throughout the world they remain oblivious, indifferent to their origin and deaf to all speculation."
In a somewhat humorous contrast to that statement, it is said that Maurice de Vlamink in his old age refused to authenticate works he actually painted because of the number of forgeries of his work on the market. He simply wasn't sure he could distinguish the nefarious works from the real thing. Elmyr de Hory was one of the major perpetrators of this forgery.
Sackler ended his introduction with these words, "An onrushing generation cries 'no more masterpieces!' Elmyr shrugs: He knows there are never enough."
