Giovanni DeSimone, a student of Pablo Picasso, was an extremely popular potter in Italy during the mid to late 20th century. This wedding jug represents some his most popular work: large and figural. His relationship to Picasso is evident in his style, which is quite reminiscent of Picasso's own ceramic work. The main difference between these two major artists is in their coloration. While Picasso's palette for his ceramic works was normally somber, consisting of mainly black on a white background, DeSimone pushes a very bright palette of warm primary and secondary colors. Oranges, reds, yellows, and greens dominate this piece, creating an exciting and childlike appearance.
