05-060. Russel Wright
American Modern chop plate
Steubenville Pottery
USA, 1939
12.5 x 12.5 x 1.5"
Glazed ceramic
Manufacturer's mark and facsimile signature

This Seafoam platter was on the first shelf I looked on, which was a pleasant surprise. It wasn't the only surprise, however. Moments later a gentleman approached me asking what type of platter I was carrying. I replied "American Modern," and only then realized it was the same fellow whose garage sale I visited a little over a week ago, and who sold me the Granite Grey American Modern teapot! It's always a strange situation encountering another collector in a thrift shop—somewhere between curiosity and territorialism. Luckily this time I was first in, since if I was just a few minutes later than I was the platter would definitely had been taken.

I'm quite pleased in the find, since I had yet to find a chop plate in this color. My collection of Seafoam American Modern is extremely small, and I'm always excited when I can add to its numbers.

Found on May 31, 2005 in New Hope, MN.

Scott said: There is a similar line which was released in the 1990's by Oneida that copied some of Russel Wright's American Modern shapes, including this one. It did indeed come in a glaze called "chicory" ... which is a dark brown with foamy golden edges. Sounds like what you are talking about is this later release, and not an original.
