In my quest for lamps over the past few months, I've been torn. While my main collecting concentration has always been the designs of Russel Wright, I've lately been very attracted to Gordon & Jane Martz designs.
Like Wright, the Martzes began their career producing their own products in a private studio. In 1953, this mom and pop style operation was given a challenge, however, when their Model 101 lamp was selected for the Good Design exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The popularity of Marshall Studios designs skyrocketed, and their production followed suit. Even with the extreme expansion of their operation, the Martzes continued to hand produce every piece of their lamps (although with the assistance of a team of artists assisting in the operation). As a testament to the quality of their work, even shades were produced by hand to specification.
This lamp is an example of one of the most popular Martz styles, using a turned incised decoration. The walnut accentsincluding a walnut finialcreate a very modern look, and a genuine feeling of craftsmanship to the design.
