05-098. Ben Seibel
Impromptu coffee pot
Iroquois China Company
USA, 1956
8.5 x 5 x 11.5"
Glazed ceramic
Manufacturer's mark and facsimile signature

It is uncommon for me to purchase Ben Seibel tableware designs. Normally, I pass them by because I would be acquiring them for resale, and lately they have been failing at auction quite regularly. Impromptu "Bridal White" pieces, however, have quite an allure about them for me. I've always thought that the best modernist tableware was undecorated, since it showcases the form of the piece over the decoration. I've always considered building a set of Impromptu in "Bridal White" for myself, and this just may be the beginning of that collection.

Found on August 27, 2005 in Hopkins, MN.

Catherine Whelchel said: I am collecting bridal white for everyday dishes, because I could not afford Eva Zeisel Museum. I don't have a coffee or Water Pitcher yet. I have a real good start on the set and need to be more diligent in watching ebay as they go reasonable. It looks nice on the table.

Scott said: I think this is a really smart move, Catherine. I think Seibel's Impromptu is every bit as nice a design as Zeisel's Museum line, and it is infinitely more affordable at the moment. I've never understood why Ben's dinnerware prices have remained so depressed over the past decade, but I have to imagine that some time in the future they'll appreciate significantly. Plus, it really is a quite beautiful table setting, as you mentioned!
