05-104. Frank Irwin
California Palm baker and large & small platters

USA, 1958
8 x 11 x 2.75"
Glazed ceramic

I assumed that today I'd return to the shop I originally saw these pieces at only to find them missing. I was certain the plates would still be there, however. I was incorrect on both assumptions. It certainly is surprising to me that someone bought the dinner plates, and not the serving pieces. It goes to show that one cannot assume sometime will remain unsold at a shop. I've pressed my luck too many times by leaving an item at a store, only to change my mind and go back looking for it.

The shop I revisited this morning to pick up these few remaining California Palm pieces is fairly large, and only gives discounts a few times a year — usually during a holiday sale. Today when I arrived, the parking lot was full (including the lot for the vacant movie theater next door)! The experience as a whole was extremely unpleasant. Pushing, noise, no room to look, and the previously mentioned crazy people reaffirmed my personal rule to avoid thrift shop sale days. I'm sure I won't attend one again in the near future.

Found on September 03, 2005 in Columbia Heights, MN.

Adam said: I agree. I stopped at that Unique during one of their sales and I couldn't take the crowd. That place turned into a MADHOUSE!
