05-115. Russel Wright
Modern Spice tablecloth
Simtex
USA, 1950
48 x 60"
Spun rayon & cotton
Unsigned (the sewn-in label has been removed)

Curry is by far my favorite Modern Spice colorway, and it is the one I find least often. I have a half dozen or so examples of Pepper/Paprika in my collection, but before today only had one exampled in Curry (and it was damaged).

Not long ago, Gary Maurer emailed an essay on Russel Wright tablecloth designs to the Russel Wright listserv. This quite interesting tome will prove to be a valuable resource for collectors of mid-century linens. It seems to me to be the most accurate of any writing on the subject I've seen to date. I highly reccomend hunting it down and adding it to your research library. Not only does it accurately describe all the known Russel Wright cloth designs, but he also tackles some very contentious myths the collecting community has debated for decades. Finally it seems we have some fairly definitive answers about what is—and more importantly what isn't—a Russel Wright design.

Found on October 18, 2005 in Brooklyn Center, MN.

Steve Basile said: What a great palette! A whole raft of RW colors and shapes would look great set on that. It's probably a darned near perfect cloth for shooting dinnerware.
