05-125. Wayne Husted
563 Mushroom decanter
Blenko Glass Company, Inc.
USA, 1956
5.5 x 5.5 x 13.5"
Glass
Unsigned

A spectacular shape! It took me a while to figure out who was the particular designer for this piece in addition to the catalog number, but the moment I saw it I knew it had to come from the Blenko workshop. The shape is very reminiscent of several different Blenko designs, mostly by Wayne Husted not surprisingly. The extreme curves along with the fluid lines made me think it was possibly a piece from the mid-1960's, so when I found the actual date of design for the 563 decanter (sometimes referred the the "Mushroom" decanter by collectors) I was a bit taken aback. It is about a decade earlier than I would have thought.

As usual, good design is always timeless and often transcends time altogether. To say this shape was ahead of its time should be obvious!

Found on November 15, 2005 in Hopkins, MN.

Deborah Alonzo said: I recently purchased an item resembling this presented Blenko piece. I noted that this particular design has a flat stopper. Can you direct me in finding out if this is a true Blenko item. The I have has a fire stopper.

Scott said: Deborah: It is very hard to tell if your decanter is Blenko or not without a picture, especially given the fact that there were so many glass makers copying Blenko designs or making items very similar in shape. You might want to check out the Blenko Collectors website, they have a bunch of information you might find useful. Their site is at http://www.blenkocollectors.com
