05-126. Russel Wright
American Modern covered casserole
Steubenville Pottery
USA, 1939
Glazed ceramic
Manufacturer's mark and facsimile signature

Normally, I would never pass up a piece of American Modern in a thrift store. This was no normal circumstance, though.

Every so often, someone working at a junk shop will have a preconceived notion of the value of an item. Many times that preconception is completely off the mark. That was the case in this situation. Even though this casserole was in great condition and was a somewhat desirable color, it was still priced well above the current value even a higher-end retail mid-century store would have marked it at.

Disappointing, but sometimes you just need to know when to let a piece go.

Left in situ on November 16, 2005 in Richfield, MN.
