05-143. Carroll Snell
The Love of the Foolish Angel woodcut
The Book League of America, Inc.
USA, 1929
6.5 x 9.5"
Two color woodcut on paper
Signed in the block

Normally I would never alter an item I purchase, unless it is to simply clean it. In this instance, however, I think by altering this book I will get more enjoyment out of it. The cover illustration by Carroll Snell is a hand-pulled, two color woodcut print. I think it deserves framing. Unfortunately, that requires removing it from the book.

Is that wrong?

The style of the cover is extremely art deco, and pulls influence from French symbolist prints of the era. I immediately thought of Aristide Maillol's woodcut illustrations, although Snell's style is decidedly American.

Found on December 17, 2005 in St. Louis Park, MN.
