It seems that the year's end is a particularly dry time in the thrift stores, but for some reason the past several years have ended with an extraordinary find. I think this is my "ending the year with a bang" find for 2005.
Ben Seibel seems to be one of the most ignored great designers of the mid 20th century. This has slowly been changing lately, but the truth is Mr. Seibel lives in the shadow of Russel Wright and Eva Zeisel when it comes to midcentury dinnerware. His most beautiful dinnerware line (in my opinion, of course), Raymor Modern Stoneware, is easily on par with Wright's American Modern and Zeisel's Town and Country. These three 10 oz. tumblers were designed as a complement to this line.
Raymor Modern Glassware is exceedingly difficult to find, and I've only seen a very few photos of examples in grey before, much less one in person. I've always considered this shape to be one of the most beautiful midcentury tumblers I've seen, so I can only hope to some day build a collection suitable for a small table setting. Until then, I'll very much enjoy these!
