06-011. Russel Wright
American Modern casserole
Steubenville Pottery
USA, 1939
12 x 8.5 x 4"
Glazed ceramic
Manufacturer's mark and facsimile signature

While the covered casserole isn't the rarest American Modern serving piece out there, finding it in Glacier Blue certainly isn't an every day (or every year) occurrence. I only have a very few common shapes in this glaze, so the addition of a nice big example makes for a fun day of thrifting!

The reason Glacier Blue is so uncommon, and thus desirable, is that it was only produced from 1955 to 1959 at the very end of American Modern's production run. For some reason, however, it seems that Cantaloupe gets more attention for rarity, even though its run was exactly the same as Glacier Blue. Maybe this is a mistaken observation, but it is my gut feeling about what topics collectors tend to gravitate towards.

Found on January 26, 2006 in Brooklyn Center, MN.
