According to Massimo Vignelli, the concept behind his line of Nuts & Bolts men's toiletries "was that of achieving product identity through the creation of an object rather than through graphics on labels. It was the height of the Pop Art movement, and the notion of transforming an object by transforming its scale was in the air."

This statement exactly sums up what he achieved with this design. The form is obviously the focus, and even though these bottles function as containers for after shave this function is secondary. In my opinion, this is the fatal flaw in Pop Art design, and post-modernism in general. Sometimes splashy high impact visuals just aren't enough. Vignelli does carry a fairly nice balance with his work, though, and as far as Pop goes this is the best of the best. it is a shape that definitely will never be forgotten.
