Alvar and his wife, Aina, designed the Aalto Flower vase for the 1939 World's Fair in New York. it is an interesting thinner and white cased variation on Aalto's seminal Savoy vase, which was originally designed in 1936. The Savoy shape is supposed to have been based on drawings named "The Eskimo Woman's Leather Breeches," although it is most likely Aalto's true inspiration came from shapes in the Finnish landscape.
This particular vase is the largest of 4 sizes produced, and is engraved "Alvar Aalto, Iittala .56" on the bottom as best as I can decipher. There is a small amount of wear to the foot, leading me to believe it may be a vintage production, but that is tough to tell by look alone. If anyone knows anything about the serial numbers on this model, please leave a comment and fill me in. Is 56 the year of production? Somehow I doubt it, since that isn't how most of the Iittala vases that I've seen are marked, but it's the best guess I have at the moment.
