George Nelson

Lord Calvert Reserve decanter

USA, 1955
3.5 x 3.5 x 11.75"
Glass, plastic, & paper
Manufacturer's label

After spending all morning perusing a local flea market with a couple collector friends and leaving empty handed, I still had "the bug" while driving towards home. I decided to stop at a couple stores, since not fifteen minutes earlier we were talking about my tendency to get lucky at the thrifts. Apparently that luck was still on my side.

While I come across these George Nelson designed Calvert decanters relatively often (on the order of one every 9 to 12 months), I only rarely see the Russel Wright counterparts. Both designs were available on their own as well as part of a two bottle gift set, which makes me believe that the Nelson design possibly sold better than the Wright design in the single bottle packages.

adam booker commented: I looked at this for some time. An interesting, and old, whiskey bottle. too bad about the label though. Had i known it was designed by George Nelson I may not have put it back on the shelf.
