06-046. Fong Chow
High Tide oval lug soup
Glidden Pottery
USA, 1955
Glazed ceramic
Manufacturer's mark

A scintillating biomorphic shape with ethereal swirls of blue and grey glaze, topped off by ... red triangle transfer decorations?

People rave about how Fong Chow's treatments helped Glidden escalate the sophistication of its products, but somehow High Tide missed the mark. If Chow simply chose to forego the transfer decorations, I would have purchased this (slightly overpriced) example of his work. However, the little red triangles scared me off, and I somewhat reluctantly passed it by. Lately I have been coveting Glidden Pottery pieces, so passing this up was difficult for me.

Left in situ on June 01, 2006 in St. Paul, MN.

Brian said: I'm with ya--the bowl is pretty interesting but the transfer design doesn't work. It looks like little teepees.
