06-059. Vera Neumann
Scarf
The Vera Companies
USA, c. 1965
22 x 22"
Acetate
Facsimile signature

A couple months ago, Kate expressed an interest in beginning to wear more scarves. At that moment, a light went off in my head. My collecting has been drastically reduced in preparation for my move out of state, but Vera Neumann scarves are small and light ... and better yet, I would be buying them for someone besides myself! I took her statement as a challenge, and have begun purchasing every Vera scarf in good condition I can lay my hands on in the thrift stores (which is surprisingly quite a large quantity!). Before today, I hadn't though about documenting them here in Ars Longa although I have mentioned Vera in the past. Unfortunately, this means I haven't written about my Vera finds over the past few weeks, but today that changes.

From what I have been finding, there are two overall categories one could organize Vera's textile designs into: geometric and floral. This green and purple example is obviously of the first category, and dates from the Mid 1960's when Vera's iconic ladybug image was dropped from her logo.

Found on September 09, 2006 in Bloomington, MN.
