06-063. Gordon Martz
238-30 Lamp
Marshall Studios, Inc.
USA, c. 1965
7.5 x 7.5 x 37.5"
Glazed ceramic, walnut, & electrical fixtures
Unsigned

Three days ago I passed this lamp up. Since I am currently packing for a big move, I hastily decided that I didn't need another. I later realized that my hope is to be moving to a larger space within the next 12 months, so I will eventually have a use for it. So today I returned and luckily it was still waiting there for me. Fortunately most Martz lamps with a wooden cap at the bottom are unsigned, so it went unnoticed through an entire weekend!

It isn't the most interesting Martz design out there, certainly, but the stoic ceramic column creates a very strong modernist visual. The form is nearly perfect from an aesthetic standpoint, and the only thing that could make it better would be (in my opinion) the addition of Martz's prehistoric cave drawing inspired sgraffito decoration. That, and an original shade.
