06-067. Russel Wright
Cocktail Sphere
The Chase Brass and Chrome Co.. USA, c. 1940 Chromium Manufacturer's mark
I'll bet you were starting to think that Ars Longa was out of commission permanently, didn't you? Well, that couldn't be further from the truth. Now that my move is all done, and I'm set up in my new house I'm out looking again, but have run into a few obstacles along the way. Central Illinois isn't the fertile hunting grounds that Minneapolis was, unfortunately, so the interesting items I see are few and far between.
Take today for instance. I was out pretty much the entire day, and the only object of interest I saw was this chrome Russel Wright cocktail ball. A pretty cool item for certain, but it was at an antique shop and I opted top pass it up. In retrospect, I probably should have purchased it. While it wasn't thrift store cheap, it was definitely underpriced in my opinion. It helped that the antique shop personnel had no idea what it was, just like in the thrifts! Hopefully this dry market will liven up a little bit. I'm going to try to start hitting some estate sales, where I hope to have better luck and can start posting items here again on a regular basis.
As a special treat for you, in honor of my long absence, the photo of the cocktail ball is also a self-portrait of sorts. The first time my photo has appeared on this site, in fact!
Left in situ on October 28, 2006 in St. Joseph, IL.
