06-070. Charles Murphy
Concord Iris celery dish
Red Wing Pottery
USA, 1941
Glazed ceramic
Manufacturer's mark

I think I'm starting to get to picky. This celery dish was in perfect shape, yet I passed it up due to lack of space. I was duly reprimanded for that lack of foresight, and I hope I'll loosen up past the point of my current "if it isn't Russel Wright, I can't have it" attitude. This pattern, Iris, is really quite fantastic. While the Concord shape was designed by Charles Murphy, the decoration was done by Belle Kogan. Together, I think they produced some of the best decorated dinnerware of the mid-20th century.

On the positive side, I saw this piece at a brand new (to me) thrift right here in town! it is by far the best shop I've been to since I moved, and have high hopes for our happy future together. And maybe the Iris celery will still be waiting for me next time I visit, although at $1.50 I doubt it.

Update 12.01.06: I went back this afternoon, and it was not surprisingly gone. I should know better.

Left in situ on November 30, 2006 in Champaign, IL.

Brian said: beautiful piece, but i know the feeling. sometimes it hard to shop when you know there is not place to put it. i'm trying to focus on enjoying what i have, but i must admit that i love the thrill of the hunt.
