07-002. Gordon Martz
M129-23 Vase
Marshall Studios
USA, c. 1957
12.5 x 3.5 x 3.5"
Glazed ceramic
Hand signed and manufacturer's paper tag

My interests as of late have been taking a turn from dinnerware to home accessories, so this find today was quite exciting for me. This vase, the largest (second largest, thanks Craig) of four sizes produced, is probably my favorite piece to date in our small Marshall Studios collection. The shape is quite modern and the glaze is fantastic — right down to the fingerprints at the base of the vase left by the craftsperson who glazed it. This small detail in the decoration (which was common for many Martz designs) not only adds a point of interest to the design, but it leaves evidence of the creator ... something which is lacking in many other midcentury designers work.

Found on January 06, 2007 in Champaign, IL.

This might be the 2nd largest size though - the largest vase is almost 15" and is also found as a lamp base. I'll try to get some of my vase pics online soon.
