07-006. Winslow Anderson
990B candle bases
Blenko Glass Company, Inc.
USA, 1952
5 x 5 x 2" each
Glass
Manufacturer's label

First manufactured in 1952, Blenko's #990B candle bases are the intended accompaniment for the #990 hurricane. Despite the early pedigree of the design, these particular examples were made after 1984, when Blenko began using the clear plastic stickers in place of the foil hand-shaped labels.

The shape of these candle holders is quite interesting, even though it is basic. It's like Winslow Anderson looked at a pair of traditional cut glass candlesticks through squinted eyes and the result was this soft, almost melted, abstraction of a well known and long used form. They'll make a great quasi-traditional addition to a modern table setting.

Found on February 01, 2007 in Champaign, IL.
