07-008. Gordon Martz
Small plates/coasters
Marshall Studios
USA, c. 1960
4 x 4 x 0.5" each
Glazed ceramic
Unsigned

On Feburary 22nd of this year we lost Jane Martz to a long battle with cancer. Though I attribute all of the Martz pottery I discuss here on Ars Longa to her husband Gordon, that isn't an entirely accurate picture of how the Martz family worked. Jane had at least much influence and creative input as her husband in Marshall Studios, and Marshall Studios itself was owned by Jane's family before the couple took over. Her loss is a sad moment in the timeline of modern studio pottery, and she will be missed.

Though not the most grand or decorative pieces of Martz pottery, these four little plates will always remind me of when Jane passed. they are wonderful little objects, representative of wonderful craftspeople.

Found on March 10, 2007 in Champaign, IL.
