07-016. Lurelle Guild
Northumberland Canape Platter
Kensington, Inc.
USA, 1934
10 x 10 x 1"
Aluminum
Manufacturer's mark

When Lurelle Guild designed the Northumberland Canape Platter, he was both reaching towards the modern while keeping a foot in the traditional. This line of decorated aluminum was Kensington's attempt to show that aluminum could indeed be treated like silver, but the clean modern shape and stylized decoration was a step above the traditional engraved silver of the day. The duality of the Art Deco style of the dancing stag versus its nod to English Aristocracy creates an interesting combination that is neither too out of reach for the not-so-modern housewife of the day, nor too stodgy for those with more modernist inclinations.
