Grete Prytz Kittelsen

Lotus mixing bowl
Catherineholm
Norway, c. 1960
9.5 x 9.5 x 4"
Enameled metal
Unsigned

About a month ago my sister-in-law learned about Grete Prytz Kittelsen's work for Catherineholm, and decided she needed to get some for herself. After both of us looked around a bit at some online auctions, I discouraged her from bidding. I see the Lotus pattern fairly regularly, and I begged her to hold out. I was sure I could find some for her at the thrift shops. This avocado on white example I picked up today is in immaculate condition, and possibly one of the nicest I've ever found. She'll be tickled!

Kate commented: Do you have any tips for finding this sort of thing? I've been dying for one of these bowls but can't afford to purchase on eBay currently b/c prices for these enamel bowls have soared recently. I frequent thrift stores for such finds but I think they are too easily snatched up in my area. Any help would be much appreciated! :) Best, Kate

Scott commented: I think there are a couple recommendations I can give you, Kate.

First off, the best thing you can do is just to keep looking and looking often. The more you get out to the thrift shops, the less likely you will miss a great piece.

Also, place matters. Look in well-populated areas like larger cities, preferably where the population has been relatively well off for the past several decades. Where are you looking currently? That might be one of your biggest obstacles to overcome.

Finally, keep you eyes peeled for other pieces besides the bowls. I much more often find cooking pieces, teapots, and the like. They are all great examples of the design, but aren't as sought after as the bowls so will be more affordable.

Good luck! I'm sure you'll find something great eventually.

Brad commented: I found an enameled ice bucket in this pattern recently. I considered that a major find.

Leif commented: I currently have over 300 pieces of Catherineholm in my home. I am constantly scouring the local thrift shops and antique shops here in Chicago and I also do alot of buying on eBay. Recently, these pieces have been showing up everywhere from Rachel Ray's cooking show to Bounty commercials. I've even seen them being used as props in a couple movies (Riding in Cars With Boys and Running With Scissors). If you are looking online, be a little creative on how you search for these items as some people that have them don't really know what they've got. I recently picked up a 12 piece avacado green Catherineholm spice jar set on eBay that someone was selling for $8.99!! These items are a joy to have around and I can't wait to find more!

Barry A. Smith commented: Hi. First off, this site is on my best of best list. Big time thanks for the days and days of information contained. Or should I say "education." I have a question about an item I have which has been suggested is a hard to come by Catherine Holm piece. Do you think this is a Holm item?

Thanks again for such an amazing resource and for your desire to share.

Kristin Johnsen commented: Hello all - great to find this site! My husband and I happened on to a museum in Oslo (free!) that had a wonderful selection of Grete's jewlerly and later design work. There were some wonderful enameled bowls - single colors, more like serving pieces than what I believe you all call Caherineholm ware - wondering whether you have any good ideas on where to find old or contemporary? We did not buy a piece and my husband really loved it - and I'd like to find a piece for Christmas! Thanks so much - kristin

Scott commented: Kristen - Your best bet will be eBay, I think. You could also try scouring your local thrift stores, but that can be very hit or miss. I haven't personally found a piece of Catherineholm enamelware in almost 2 years. Good luck!
