At the end of an epic thrifting weekend in Minnesota, my youngest brother and I decided to go out on one more trek before I needed to pack my things up and head back to Illinois. While it is my experience that Sundays are not the nest for thrift store shopping, today was relatively successful. Besides adding this great set of four place mats to our Vera collection, I also picked up three more Vera scarves (which I haven't pictured) for Kate ... making a total of 6 Vera scarves for the weekend!

Kate and I have been looking for Vera table linens for quite some time now with no success. It seems like I couldn't turn around in a thrift shop a few years ago without knocking a dozen or so Vera placemats and tablecloths off the racks. Could this be an indication that the Vera market is taking off? Possibly, but I hope I can keep finding scarves with the frequency I've been lately. It makes thrifting trips fun, especially when there are slimmer pickings.

On a less sunny side of things, traveling around Minneapolis this past weekend has been somber. Trying to find new ways around town in the wake of the I-35 bridge collapse disaster is a constant reminder of the people who lost their lives in the tragedy. Every new route I needed to think up was another opportunity to remind myself of how lucky I am that all of my family and friends are safe and well. My heart goes out to all the families who lost loved ones, and everyone who knows someone who was injured. I pray for a speedy recovery for those who were hurt, as well as for the Minnesota community as a whole.

Mary Lou Blish said: I was so glad to know that I was right. In 1966 I was living in an artsy section of Biffalo, N.Y. and I purchased some napkins and a green plate with Vera on them. I put them away and never used them. recently I have been thinking that I should get rid of some of my finer collections as I'm probably never going to have those " dinner parties" that I thought I might have some day. I am 63 and it doesn't look like I will be having lots of people over as I can barely get dinner on the table for my husband and me. Ha Ha! I saw that Rachael Ray had an enamel ware bowl that matches my larger round serving plate on her cooking show 30 minue meals. I was so excited to think that I had had such good taste so long ago. Thanks for the last name of "Vera" now I can put them on e-bay and know what I am talking about..
