07-040. Russel Wright
Casual China open vegetable bowl
Iroquois China Company
USA, 1946
8 x 8 x 2.25"
Glazed ceramic
Unmarked

My lunch hour today consisted of a quick trip to the Goodwill to drop off a small clothing donation which was the result of a brief but frenzied closet cleaning. But no trip to the Goodwill is ever complete without actually going in to shop, and during that portion of my "lunch" I found this little Casual China open vegetable bowl in the early Nutmeg variant some collectors have named "Fudgy Nutmeg." The odd thing is that this particular piece is not marked. It is known that some Casual China pieces made it through production without receiving their backstamp, but this occurrence was a rarity and most of the unmarked pieces I've seen have been Charcoal Gray ... not Nutmeg. In any case, the only other open veggie we have in our cupboards came as a wedding gift, and one can never have too many serving pieces!

To totally switch gears for a minute, I am a firm believer in "thrift karma." Donating to the thrift stores rather than just buying from them is not only good for the thrifts, I think, but it is also beneficial for your shopping luck. This find today has been marked firmly in that column. If I hadn't made the donation, I never would have gotten this bowl. Plus, it is good to be on both ends of the reuse and recycle continuum.
