It seems like I have been posting a lot of Stoneage Modern pieces lately, and I would have passed up virtually any other shape today (and did). This particular form, however, is exceptional!
I was first made aware of this series in the Stoneage Modern line a few years ago by Craig McCormick, who was kind enough to send me a pdf of a distributor's illustrative brochure titled "Pristine Expressions in Stoneware for Foyer, Showroom and Office" from his collection. This pamphlet claims "Your range of choice is immeasurably richened by the scope of our new collection. We offer twelve bold basic shapes, many in several sizes. Each style is available in any of six traditional potter's colors ... Sandstone, Quince, Saxony Blue, Cannon Black, and Burnt Sienna are kiln-glazed; Golden Poppy is a special silicone-based finish." This could easily translate to several hundred variations!
Although the piece I found today is quite small, the shape is still very compelling. I would love to see a small grouping together sometime, as I would guess the visual effect would be stunning. And the large pieces on their own can easily rival any of the "big name" sculptural pottery firms of the era, including Architectural Pottery. Now only to find an example in the elusive Golden Poppy ... that would be perfect for our living room!
