Earlier today I received a very compelling email from someone who has spend the past decade and a half researching Russel Wright plasticware. They inquired about a comment I made on a different website, which seemed to indicate I had seen a very rare if not previously unseen piece that they might be interested in. This email spurred me on, and I took a small road trip to investigate this piece I had seen. Unfortunately, It was not how I had remembered, and thus was not of the rarity we had assumed.
However, before leaving town I stopped at a store I visit at least twice weekly. In some sort of thrift-karmic message, these 10 Flair "Arabesque" bread & butter plates and saucers were there waiting for me. This is an absolutely beautiful treatment on a stunning shape, and always welcome finding more of it. It's grace in the Russel Wright oeuvre is second maybe only to Theme Formal. if any line warrants the question as to why Russel's plasticware has been largely underestimated by collectors and historians, this is it!
I've been talking a lot lately about going out and looking for specifics, and how it seems if you are looking for something in particular you'll only rarely find it. Today that point was again emphasized to me. My road trip was a failure, but a random stop close to home was quite to opposite. And once again, I'll take whatever I can get!
