07-047. Paul McCobb
Custom China platter
Jackson Internationale
USA, 1973
Glazed ceramic
Manufacturer's mark and facsimile signature

From afar I thought this platter was another piece of Paul McCobb's Contempri line of dinnerware (which I hoard for my sister-in-law when I can find it). It however turned out to be the restaurant ware version of this line, called Custom China. The major difference between these two lines is the weight of the pottery. While Contempri is gracefully thin, Custom China is its bulky and not-quite-as-attractive step sibling. This is to be expected of any dinnerware intended to be used in a restaurant, and to be honest McCobb did seemingly stay true to the shapes in the line which are quite beautiful. I the end, I passed it up because of the price and condition. Plus the aforementioned sister-in-law is only collecting undecorated pieces, and I definitely do not need to start collecting another line of dishes for myself.

Left in situ on December 09, 2007 in Champaign, IL.
