Kate and I had our first thrifting road trip of 2008 this weekend to our state's capitol city: Springfield. Ever since we moved down here to central Illinois, our thrifting peers have been telling us that the best stores in the region are in Springfield, so we decided we finally should check those rumors out for ourselves. While the selection of midcentury modern housewares was modest, Kate happily replenished her wardrobe. The only thing of note we took home from our trip was this set of three Vera napkins. I still think Springfield has potential, though, so I'm sure we'll be back in the not-too-distant future.
It seems funny, though, that I never find an entire service of Vera napkins. Mostly I've been finding them in sets of two and three. We have plenty to "mix and match" enough for when we have guests over, as long as we are OK with an eclectic dinner table. It makes me wonder if they were sold in smaller settings, for four perhaps, and make their way to thrift shops when one or two is lost? It'd make sense if they were sold in sets of four and marketed to the young housewife, I think. Do any of you have insight into how these linens were merchandised?
