This morning Kate and I found ourselves pondering how to keep occupied during this commitmentless Saturday. My brother and sister-in-law were supposed to be coming for a visit, but the weather in their area cancelled their plans for them leaving us with nothing to do. Not surprisingly, since the weather here was beautiful — albeit frigid — I suggested a thrift shop road trip. This has become a fairly common activity for us when we have nothing more pressing at hand, and it is proving to be a fun way of exploring different parts of the state.

It seems that almost every time we do one of these little drives around Illinois, we bring home some odd assortment of Vera textiles. Besides the two scarves Kate found for herself and a great Christmas themed tablecloth we purchased at ... gasp ... an antique store, we came across this odd assortment of four placemats and a napkin. Originally we thought we had five napkins, but as we spread them out after returning home we noticed that four of the five were rectangular while the fifth was square. The funny part is the placemats are actually smaller than the lone napkin. An odd design choice on Vera's part, it seems, but I think it might leave us with the option of applying an "alternate use" to them. I can see us pulling them out as additional napkins when needed. Even though their shape is a bit strange for a napkin, they are a good size for that purpose. Maybe Vera was thinking ahead to multi-functionalism?

Found on January 19, 2008 in Bloomington, IL.

Dawn said: Great Find! You do have an affinity for finding Vera. It must be in your DNA, lol. Is today National Vera Day (even though I didn't get the memo)? I found a groovy Vera scarf in almost those colors today as well for the huge sum of .50 Score! As for use, use 'em however suits your fancy. Yes, I think Vera was thinking ahead, because her stuff is so timeless. Best, Dawn

Brad said: I don't see a whole lot of Vera here for some reason--at least not at thrifts or antique stores--and only occasionally at garage sales.
