08-010. Wayne Husted
588 Architectural Decanter
Blenko Glass Company, Inc.
USA, 1958
6 x 6 x 30.5"
Glass
Unmarked

The 588 floor vase holds a special place in Blenko history, as it was the first "Architectural Decanter" produced by the company. Blenko would continue to create these huge decorative pieces in years to come, but the #588 was a trendsetting design for the company and at over 30 inches in height makes a very definite statement in a room. This particular example may possibly be Aqua, in which this shape was only produce for one year. Blenko produced so many similar shade that it might also be Sea Green, or another variation on this light blue-green hue.

When the woman at the register asked me what I intended to do with it, I didn't have the heart to disclose that ultimately it was slated for resale. Instead I told her it would decorate my living room, which wasn't a lie since that's exactly what it is doing at the moment.Unfortunately, when I got it home and untaped the stopper from the body of the decanter (yes, they used packing tape to make sure the two pieces weren't separated) I found that there was a large crack at the lip. It is damage that would be easily hidden by simply putting the cracked part towards the wall, but unfortunately it reduces the potential auction price down to only a fraction of what it would be worth in perfect shape. In any case, it really is an impressive and imposing piece of glass.

Found on March 10, 2008 in Bloomington, IL.
