08-015. Vera Neumann
Field Flowers dessert plate
Mikasa
Japan, c. 1975
6.5 x 6.5 x 0.75"
Glazed ceramic
Facsimile signature and manufacturer's mark

Every time Kate and I travel back to Minnesota, we stop as often as possible at thrift shops along our route in hopes of finding treasures. Some trips are more successful than others, which is not surprising, and this particular drive turned up very little of interest.

We did come across, however, this little Vera Newmann dessert plate in the Field Flowers pattern. Not only is this interesting to me because I hardly ever see Vera dishes in thrift stores (this is the first in at least 3 years), but also because it gives us a name for a pattern which we have seen before. Only a couple months ago we found a pair of napkins in this same pattern here locally in town. It is nice to be able to join them into a very small set, which some day we hope to be able to grow into a full setting. When it comes to doing so via thrifting, we're required to simply take one step at a time. And I'm more than happy to do so.

Found on May 05, 2008 in Eau Claire, WI.
