08-018. Alvin Lustig
The Spoils of Poynton book cover
New Directions Books
USA, 1943
5 x 7.25 x 1"
Bound paper
Facsimile signature and manufacturer's mark

Just the other day I posted an article to the front page of Ars Longa about Alvin Lustig's early book covers for New Directions, and now today I find one of his later covers to share! Classically late Lustig in form, this particular cover for Henry James' The Spoils of Poynton takes inspiration from the text and abstracts the ideas dealt with into visual symbols. Unfortunately this particular example has some areas of loss and wear, but this cannot distract from Lustig's powerful imagery. Damage or not, it will find an honored place on my book shelf ... after I read it, of course!

Found on May 21, 2008 in Champaign, IL.
