I've really got to stop going to used book stores! My book obsession is starting to get the best of me (and my checkbook), since it seems that I can't get out of a store without having spent $40 lately. That, along with the fact that Ars Longa is becoming a little too book-intensive: 6 of the past 8 entries have been modernist book covers. At least that gives you a bit of an insight into my mindset lately.

In my pile this afternoon was this little New Directions hardcover biography of E.M. Forster by Lionel Trilling. Part of the Makers of Modern Literature series, this book jacket featured a generic design Alvin Lustig came up with that could be used across a large series of titles simply by modifying the color palette and title. In all, I believe this cover in some variation was used on seven different New Directions titles.

Also in my pile was another New Directions book which may also have a Lustig cover. I am waiting to hear back from a couple experts about that attribution before I post it, though. Anyone renting out library space? I think I may need it.
