It has been a very long time since I've come across such a large group of Casual China dinnerware in a thrift shop. In fact, the only time I've found a larger set in a thrift was before I started writing Ars Longa — prior to 2004, that is. At least 4 or 5 years. Maybe more. And the difference then was the set was Ripe Avocado. Boring. This time it is Ice Blue, a color Kate and I have often said we'd like to have a full set of some day.

That said, we've been painstakingly trying to save money for a trip we've planned for this fall. We've been cutting so many corners, in fact, I hesitated at spending $30 on more dishes we don't really need. But after a call to Kate, we decided that the want outweighed the need in this instance, and we went ahead and bought them. In the end, I think the open vegetable bowl that was included in the group was worth the price alone. It maybe wouldn't realize that price on eBay, but its worth it to me ... and that's what counts!

Found on June 17, 2008 in Champaign, IL.

Dawn said: Congrats and Kudos! Trust me, you made the right decision. Finds like these don't come along that often, and you did good carpe diem-ing! I am very happy for you. Let's see a table-setting pic someday with all you groovy stuff! Best, Dawn

Scott said: Thanks Dawn! A table photo isn't a bad idea ... maybe I'll do one some day we actually eat inside. We've been grilling on the patio so much, I might not remember HOW to set the table!
