08-026. Gordon Martz
Ecumenical-ware goblet
Marshall Studios
USA, c. 1957
4 x 4 x 6.75"
Glazed ceramic
Unmarked

It has been over a year since Kate and I have made a thrift shopping road trip to Springfield, IL, so this morning we jumped in the car first thing in the morning to see what we could find. On the whole we weren't overly successful, although Kate came home with a few Vera scarves and thirty or so vintage sewing patterns. I passed up a small lot of Russel Wright Casual China saucers (we have zillions) and a damaged American Modern gravy boat (I won't buy damaged pieces anymore, unless spectacular), and purchased a book that should have had an Alvin Lustig designed jacket. Unfortunately the important part was missing, so I won't bother showing it to you.

The prize of the day, however, was this Marshall Studios ecumenical-ware goblet. This is a particularly interesting shape in that it is multi-functioning. As shown, it is obviously a goblet. Turned upside-down (and probably not with this particular decoration, given the connotation of an upturned cross) it becomes a candlestick. Either way — goblet or candlestick — I think it made the trip worth while.

Found on July 12, 2008 in Springfield, IL.

Brad said: that's a nice piece. I don't think that there are too many of these out there.
