My first find at the World's Longest Yard Sale was almost missed! I was getting ready to head back to the van and wait for my shopping mates to finish looking when I spotted a box of linens I didn't notice on my first pass. Way at the bottom was this Modern Spice cloth!
While only two colorways of the Modern Spice line Curry and Pepper/Paprika have been documented in primary research materials as being the work of Russel Wright, several others color combinations laid out in the same plaid pattern have been found by collectors over the years. These undocumented variants are thought to be possibly after-market palettes used by Simtex without Wright's involvement, but until further materials surface we can't truly say for certain.
What I can say is I've never seen this combination of black, brown, white, and lemon yellow before. When I first grabbed it from the bottom of the box I found it in, I thought perhaps it was one that I didn't currently have represented in my collection. But when I returned to the car I started to over-think it, and began to confuse this colorway with that of the known Wright "Curry" color, which is made up of brown, green, "curry" yellow, and grey. I wasn't able to sort this out for myself until after I returned home and compare them side by side, though, because they are fairly similar in how the colors relate to each other in the plaid. I'm quite pleased with this find, particularly because it did turn out to be a color I didn't have.
Note: This item was actually found on August 7th, 2008: day one of my road trip through The World's Longest Yard Sale.
Found on August 11, 2008 in Castine, OH.
