Day Three: The World's Longest Yard Sale.

For a long time now Kate and I have been trying to build up our collection of Russel Wright melamine dinnerware, concentrating specifically on the Residential and Home Decorators lines. Since the shapes of these lines are identical, and only the colors and patterns differ, they tend to go well together and can be used intermixed on the table to create interesting combinations.

On the last day of shopping, Kate was feeling under the weather with the beginnings of a cold. We had already hit a couple large "encampments" of sellers (for lac of a better term), and she was exhausted so she decided to sit in the car and try to save herself for another full day of sales. This meant I was on my own looking for the items on our "wish list."

In literally the last sale in the area before we needed to get back to the car and drive up the road, I came across a small group of Home Decorators dinnerware with the "Flower Time" decoration. Since we already had plenty of cups and saucers but barely any serving pieces, I snatched up the single piece that caught my attention — this gigantic platter. It is scratched. It is our only piece with this decoration. It isn't particularly rare or valuable. But even though it might seem lonely in our cupboards at the moment, I still consider it an important addition to our collection and am happy to have found at least one piece of Wright's plasticware on our journey.

This also turned out to be my last find of the sale. There seemed to be very little of interest to a collector of modernism in this part of the country, but there is at least some poetry in having my first and last finds of the trip be designs by Russel Wright. Plus there were five days of spending time on the road exploring new parts of the United States with good friends, which I wouldn't have traded for anything in the world.

Note: This item was actually found on August 9th, 2008: day three of my road trip through The World's Longest Yard Sale.

Found on August 11, 2008 in Albany, KY.
