Alvar Aalto
(1910-1993)
Noted Sandinavian Modern designer Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto was born to educated parents in 1898 in Kuortane, Finland. As a child Alvar was fond of drawing, which led him to his education and ultimately in 1921 to a career in architecture. Aalto's trademark became the use of the natural surroundings as an inspiration and starting point for his designs, and after a trip to the US in 1938 he became more focused on the use of standardized materials. Both of these core modernist tenets were realized at the onset of World War 2, when Alvar began searching for new approaches to design and put a great deal of effort into developing inexpensive housing to help rebuild war-torn Finland. Aalto's work spans the areas of architecture, furniture, and glassware design.
