Bernard Buffet
(1928-1999)
Classified as a "Miserabilist" along with the likes of Georges Rouault, popular French fine artist Bernard Buffet entered the Paris art scene as a 15 year old boy when he was admitted to the prestigious Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Five short years later, the prolific painter and printmaker was awarded the Critics Award at the tender age of 20. His angular, dark, and sparsely painted technique is unmistakable, especially considering his usual subject matter of clowns, floral still lives, cityscapes, and religious themes. Beyond his work in paint Buffet was also an acclaimed printmaker, prolific and accomplished in lithography and engraving. His work has been exhibited in at least 53 one-person exhibitions spanning from 1952 to his death in 1999, and he was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1974.
