(1922 - 2007)
Cincinnati-based artist and illustrator Charles "Charley" Harper is best known for his highly geometric and linear depictions of wildlife, a style he deemed "minimal realism." Educated at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, Harper began his career as an educator while developing himself as a commercial artist. Harper is primarily remembered for two books filled with his illustrations: The Golden Book of Biology (1961) and Dinner for Two (1958). His sense of whimsy has captured contemporary culture, too, and in 2011 was finally recognized with an exhibition of his work.
Harper's work is now held in the collections of several major museums. In 2003 he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Sharonville Fine Arts Council, and December 8, 2006 was declared "Charley Harper Day" by the Mayor of Cincinnati.
